APEX in Action is pleased to join the Asian Breast Health Outreach Project (ABHOP) in the 2006 Dallas Race for the Cure. Join the ABHOP team in support of the Komen Foundation research for finding a cure for breast cancer. Our goal is to raise at least $1,500 and have 50+ team walkers. We'll take a team picture for this event and you'll get an ABHOP team t-shirt. What a testimony it would be to see the Asian community get together to support this worthy cause! After the 5K race/walk, we'll go to the ABHOP booth and some team participants will receive prizes. Contact team captains Tracy or Wendy for questions or more details.
Think that breast diseases don't really afflict Asian women or even men? That's not true. Check out the following webpage from the Intercultural Cancer Council (not an APEX or ABHOP sponsor) for some staggering statistics & facts on Asians and cancer: http://iccnetwork.org/cancerfacts/cfs3.htm.

The Asian Breast Health Outreach Project (ABHOP) focus is on minimizing the barriers that keep Asian women from fully participating in the early detection of breast cancer. By addressing language, fear, culture, lack of information, economic and transportation barriers that may have been factors in this priority group, we hope to achieve this goal. By providing educational seminars and distributing literature in their native language, breast health awareness for Asian women will be increased. ABHOP will also provide screening mammography services and referrals at no cost to low-income, medically underserved Asian women originally only in Dallas County and now extended to Collin & Denton Counties. Free screenings and services are conducted at Richardson Regional Medical Center/Center for Women's Health. For information call: (972) 498-8601.
