04/01/07 APEX In Action: Volunteers for CPS Ball & Dolls Toys Drive

Date: Sunday, April 1, 2007
Shifts: 2:30pm - 5:00pm
Location: Gladney Center for Adoption, 6300 John Ryan Drive, Forth Worth, TX 76132
RSVP by March 14th to Stephanie, stephanie@apexdallas.org

Please join us as we volunteer at the Adoption Appreciation - Ball & Dolls Toy Drive celebration. We will be assisting throughout the event, including helping the kids in an Easter Egg hunt. Since March 1st, local area businesses have participated in collecting brand new dolls and sports balls to be given to children who are currently in the foster care system. Each week, the toy drive and participating drop locations are featured on CW33 during a segment called "A Child to Love". This event will celebrate the 100th airing of "A Child to Love" featuring some local foster children and their foster families. There will be guest speakers, bounce houses, toy giveaways, egg hunt, food and more fun!

Since we will be working with children in the CPS network, a volunteer application, background check authorization and confidentiality agreement will be required. Please email the completed forms here to stephanie@apexdallas.org by March 14th to sign up.

This event is presented by the Mark Clayton Foundation, CW33, Gladney Center for Adoption and Child Protective Services (CPS).

APEX In Action is the name for the Community Service part of our organization. Come and join us as we take Action to make a difference in our community.

Welcome to our next GICD project at the East Dallas Asian Gardens. We had a lot of fun last time, so come and join us at this project. We will be helping at the annual plant sale. A few hours of your time will make a huge difference to the lives of many who count on these gardens to thrive. We need volunteers to help with the following:

* Assist buyers with their selections and carrying them from the garden to the car
* Cambodian speakers to help translate for gardeners to their customer
* Watering plants
* Cleaning up the trays and restocking plants/vegetables ready for sale
* Tour guides to give tours of the garden and provide more information about GICD (guides will need to
attend a special training)

Gardeners in Community Development (GICD) is a Dallas area nonprofit organization whose purpose is to promote community gardening as a way to enhance neighborhood life. Each year GICD makes it possible for hundreds of Dallas area families, mostly low-income, to enjoy fresh vegetables, herbs, fruits and flowers grown in the community gardens. There are 3 gardens in East Dallas known as the Asian Gardens. These gardens were started in 1987 as a project to assist the Southeast Asian refugee community. Our first project will focus on the pathways through the main market garden. The farmers are getting older and do not have the energy to keep up with the common areas. This market garden also grows extra vegetables which are donated to area food banks. For more information, please visit www.gardendallas.org.

04/28/07 Volunteers for CPS Spring Fling Match Party

Date: Saturday, April 28, 2007
Shifts: 10:00am - 1:00pm and 2:00pm - 5:00pm
Location: The Temple of Faith CMF Church, 14120 Noel Road, Dallas, TX 75254
Contact: Lynette McCurdy, patsy.mccurdy@dfps.state.tx.us (Please RSVP by April 14th if you have not yet passed the CPS screening)

Child Protective Services (CPS) is hosting an event on Saturday, April 28th called the Spring Fling Match Party. The object of the event is to match up children available for adoption with families that are licensed to adopt. They try to do this in a casual, fun setting for the children, so they do not feel like they are on display. There will be different games booths set up for the children, along with bounce houses & things of the sort. Usually hot dogs & chips are served for lunch, which is free for all. There may also be popcorn & snow cone machines. The day is divided up into two parts. One party will be held between 10:00 - 1:00 for children 10 & under. The second party will be held from 2:00 - 5:00 for children 11 & older.

Volunteers have the option of working all day, or just the morning or afternoon party. The Match Party will be held at The Temple of Faith CME Church at 14120 Noel Rd in Dallas. If you would like to volunteer for this event, please specify what hours you would like to volunteer. Also, to work with the children in the CPS network, a volunteer application, background check authorization and confidentiality agreement will be required. If you have already passed the CPS screening, you will not need to again for this project. To sign up, please contact Lynette McCurdy at patsy.mccurdy@pfps.state.tx.us.
