Between Reality and Illusion
A group exhibition of Asian contemporary art guest-curated by Karol Howard and George Morton

Marty Walker Gallery presents Between Reality and Illusion , a group exhibition featuring works by Asian contemporary artists Michiko Kon, Kana Harada, Li Yonbin, Liu Ren, Xiaoze Xie, Lui Ding, Shintaro Sato, and Hiroyuki Doi. The exhibition was guest-curated by Dallas-based collectors Karol Howard and George Morton and will feature an accompanying exhibition catalog with an essay by artist Xiaoze Xie.

Of particular interest is Dallas-based artist Kana Harada and UNT graduate Xiaoze Xie. Harada, who is a Japanese artist living in Dallas , is known for her intricate cut-foam configurations that suspend from the ceiling. Xie, originally from Beijing , came to the U.S. in 1993 to study painting at University of North Texas . His work quickly became sought after among art collectors in the Dallas area, and can still be seen in the collections of John Reoch, Richard and Nona Barrett, and many others.

The exhibition was inspired by the collectors' friendship and patron support of Dallas artist Kana Harada and UNT graduate Xiaoze Xie. Morton and Howard visited Japan last spring with Harada and found themselves drawn to works of a spiritual and philosophical nature. Upon returning to Dallas , they contacted Xie and invited him to be part of the exhibition. Xie, currently a professor at Bucknell University , had a trip planned to his hometown Beijing and secured three other Chinese artists for the exhibition. Xie has written the essay for the accompanying catalog.

Mochitsuki, pounding Japanese sweet rice to make rice cakes, is traditionally held at shrines, public places, and homes at the end of the year. Kine (mallet) and usu (mortar) are used to pound the steamed mochi rice. The preparations begin days in advance, but the spirit of cooperation and hard work that go into making mochi bring people together and make the effort worthwhile. People take turns pounding, turning, and eating mochi, sharing thoughts about the past year and hopes and dreams for the next. Nowadays, electric mochi-makers have made mochi-making more convenient, so those will be on hand as well. We hope you will join us for this special event and partake of some homemade mochi, New Year's traditions, and good company.

• Tapioka, Teen girls' band
