06/02/07 APEX Charity Putt-Putt Golf Tournament

Welcome to our APEX charity putt-putt golf tournament. Come and enjoy a few rounds of putt-putt golf with your friends while supporting a good cause. We are starting a building fund to help improve the main entrance and vending area of the GICD East Dallas Asian garden.

The farmers are getting older and do not have the energy to keep up with some of the garden's maintenance. Our first project last fall focused on mulching for the pathways throughout the main market garden. This April, we will be assisting with the garden's annual plant sale. The vending area is currently pieced together with spare pipes and plastic. It needs a floor for easier upkeep, an outdoor sink to wash vegetables in and a new overhead covering to keep the farmers sheltered from the elements. Please help our building fund while having some fun!

Gardeners in Community Development (GICD) is a Dallas area nonprofit organization whose purpose is to promote community gardening as a way to enhance neighborhood life. Each year GICD makes it possible for hundreds of Dallas area families, mostly low-income, to enjoy fresh vegetables, herbs, fruits and flowers grown in the community gardens. There are 3 gardens in East Dallas known as the Asian Gardens. These gardens were started in 1987 as a project to assist the Southeast Asian refugee community. This market garden also grows extra vegetables which are donated to area food banks. For more information, please visit www.gardendallas.org.

Asian Breast Health Outreach Project (ABHOP) focuses on minimizing the barriers that keep Asian women from fully participating in the early detection of breast cancer. To achieve this goal, they concentrate on a four-step process of awareness, education, screening, and referral. ABHOP provides education seminars on early detection. They also provide free mammagrams to uninsured and under-insured Asian women. They are located at Richardson Regional Medical Center.
